How to use wool pellets
-
Add to soil
Wool pellets can be added directly to a plants hole upon planting, or scattered on a garden bed and worked into soil at a rate of 1:8 pellets to soil.
If using wool pellets in a houseplant, you can stop at this step and your plants will receive a wonderful dose of nutrients.
Many customers opt to use wool/manure mixed pellets for this step for the added nutrient benefit of manure.
-
Mulch
Top dress your garden with a single layer of wool pellets leaving 1-2 inches diameter around each plant pellet-free. Water thoroughly to lock in the pellets. Over the course of a couple days the wool will knit together to create a solid mulch.
This mulch will retain moisture, protect the soil from elements, limit weeds, and deter pests like slugs and snails all while releasing essential nutrients to your plants.
Straight wool pellets are a popular choice for this application as they create a thick well knitted mulch.
-
Amend seasonally
For garden applications, at the end of the growing season, mix the mulch into your soil to give it a fall boost. Repeat previous two steps in the spring at time of planting.
For houseplants, boost the soil annually in the spring or whenever your plant looks like it could use a nutrient top up.
Which pellet is right for you?
Wool pellets
NPK: 12.5-0.2-4.3
Created purely from sheep wool, this product is excellent for water retention while giving your soil and plants the nutrition boost they deserve. We estimate that these pellets are made up of 95% wool, and 5% manure and other vegetation material that stick to the wool as the sheep go about their days.
Wool pellets are excellent water retainers and soil protectors. This pellet is an ideal choice for mulching gardens, in ground and container gardens alike, and especially hanging plants to help reduce watering efforts. These pellets are also loved by houseplants to give them a year round slow release nutrient boost.
Our wool is sourced from Alberta sheep producers who would otherwise discard their wool. It isn’t textile quality and is destine for the landfill or burn pile. By purchasing our pellets, you are helping divert unnecessary waste.
We pride ourselves in paying sheep producers a fair value for the wool we use in our products.
Manure pellets
NPK: 7.7-0.6-3
Our alpacas do the hard work for you by digesting high quality feed year round and converting it into nutrient rich beans that we process into a clean product to feed your plants. Packed full of micronutrients, the manure is mixed with wool to help bind the pellet which adds the benefits of wool to your soil as well. This line of products is loved by customers who tend flower gardens and some opt to use them on their vegetable gardens and indoor plants as well. There isn’t a foul smell to these products and it has been noted that alpaca poop tends to keep cats out of gardens.
Alpaca manure is a cold manure and can safely be applied directly to gardens right from the source, though the pelletization process allows the manure to breakdown more efficiently in your garden, potted plants, and houseplants - that’s right, we use it in our house plants as they love the nutritional boost and it does not produce an odor once in the soil.
Our manure is sourced 100% from our farm from animals who are routinely monitored by our veterinarian team, assessed for parasites daily, and eat a diet of untreated Alberta grown pasture grass and hay.
